Foreigners living and working in Vietnam may be granted temporary residence cards (TRC). However, depending on the circumstances and cases, the temporary residence cards may be issued with different validities, and also require different documents to be prepared. Here are some basic information about temporary residence cards for foreigners in Vietnam you should know before doing a TRC.

1/ What is temporary residence card?

Foreign nationals wishing to temporarily reside and work in Vietnam need to apply for a temporary residence card. A temporary resident card (TRC) can be considered as a long-term visa.

However, unlike Visa, temporary residence cards have a longer duration, usually issued for a period of 1 year to 5 years. Foreigners with temporary residence cards will be exempted from visas and can enter and exit multiple times according to their work needs for the duration of the cards, thus saving time and money.

In addition, temporary residence card holders can guarantee for family members to apply the same type of temporary resident card.

2/ Who can get a Vietnam temporary resident card?

Foreign citizens can apply for temporary residence card in Vietnam:

1. Foreigners who are members of a limited liability company with two or more members;
2. Foreigners who are owners of one-member limited liability companies (except authorized representatives);
3. Foreigners who are members of the Managing Boards of joint-stock companies;
4. Foreign lawyers have been granted law practice licenses by the Ministry of Justice in Vietnam according to the provisions of law;
5. Foreigners with work permits who are working in various types of enterprises or representative offices of foreign companies;
6. Experts, students, trainees, currently working and studying under national programs and projects signed between the ministries and branches approved by the Government;
7. Accompanying relatives include (father, mother, wife, husband, children) of temporary residence card holders or Vietnamese citizens.

3/ Validity of Vietnam temporary resident card

The duration of a temporary residence card:

• The validity of the temporary residence card is valid for at least 30 days shorter than the expiry date of the passport.
• Temporary residence cards with symbols NG3, LV1, LV2, ĐT and DH are valid for no more than 05 years.
• Temporary residence cards with symbols NN1, NN2, TT are valid for not more than 03 years.
• Temporary residence cards with the symbol LD and PV1 are valid for no more than 2 years.
• Expired temporary residence cards are considered for granting new cards.

4/ Documents for applying temporary resident card in Vietnam

An application for temporary residence card includes:

a/ Documents for foreign workers who have been granted a work permit:

• A copy of the business registration certificate or other equivalent document;
• Copy of seal registration certificate;
• Copy of tax registration certificate;
• A copy of the work permit with a term of 1 year or more;
• 04 photos sized 3 × 4 cm, bareheaded, with clear face, clear ears, without tinted glasses, taken within 6 months;
• 01 copy of passport, valid visa, entry and exit ticket (enclosed with the original for comparison);
• A copy of the certificate of temporary residence certified by ward police.

b/ Documents for foreign workers without work permit:

• Copy of Investment Certificate or other equivalent documents;
• Copy of seal registration certificate;
• Copy of tax registration certificate;
• Copy of Proof of eligibility for a work permit;
• 04 photos sized 3 × 4 cm, bareheaded, with clear face, clear ears, without tinted glasses, taken within 6 months;
• 01 copy of passport, valid visa, entry and exit ticket (enclosed with the original for comparison);
• A copy of the certificate of temporary residence certified by ward police.

c/ Documents for relatives traveling with foreign workers:

In addition to the documents of the foreign worker, the accompanying relative needs to provide the following documents:

• 04 photos sized 3 × 4 cm, bareheaded, with clear face, clear ears, without tinted glasses, taken within 6 months;
• 01 copy of passport, valid visa, entry and exit ticket (enclosed with the original for comparison);
• A copy of the certificate of temporary residence certified by ward police.
• Copy of proof of purpose for temporary residence confirmation
• Depending on each specific case, a legalized copy and a Vietnamese translation of the marriage registration certificate must be provided; Birth certificate; Papers proving family relation, etc.
